DESCRIPTION |
Under close supervision at the lower level and under direction at the higher level, provides interpreting and translating services for patients, clients and staff in the Health Care Services Agency; and performs related work as required. DISTINGUISHING FEATURES MEDICAL TRANSLATOR II: This is the journey-level class in the Medical Translator series. Incumbents in this class provide a full range of interpreter and translator services requiring an extensive general vocabulary and knowledge of medical terminology in two or more languages.

NOTE: The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed. 1. Provides interpreter/translator services to clients and their families, and the staffof the Health Care Services Agency, including providing telephone translations.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS |
MEDICAL TRANSLATOR II Either I Six months as a Medical Translator I in the Alameda County classified service. (Non-classified includes District Attorney’s Office, Hospital Authority, and the Consolidated Courts.) Or II The equivalent of six months of full-time work experience providing translator/interpreter services in a health care setting. NOTE: The Civil Service Commission may modify the above Minimum Qualifications in the announcement of an examination.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS |
NOTE: The level and scope of the following knowledge and abilities are related to duties listed under the “Examples of Duties” section of this specification. Knowledge of: • Interpretation and translation of languages, including intra-cultural literacy levels, principle idioms and slang. Ability to: • Speak, read and write a second language fluently.
